Le signe du pacte, un pentacle, se trouve à son œil droit, que Ciel garde toujours caché sauf lorsqu’il a besoin de faire appel à son majordome protecteur. Sebastian a le signe du pacte sur sa main gauche. C’est ainsi que Ciel et son majordome se mettent à résoudre différentes énigmes, en général surnaturelles, sur ordre de la reine Victoria du Royaume-Uni. Ciel est ce qu'on appelle dans le manga, le « chien de garde de la Reine », c'est-à-dire son détective privé. Il est aussi très perspicace et sûr de lui (pour son âge) lorsqu’il s’agit de mener une enquête, doublant souvent Scotland Yard dans leurs investigations… Néanmoins le mystère reste omniprésent dans la série et l'action y est aussi.
