Following the death of the second Tokugawa shogun, it is revealed that he was poisoned by retainers of his son Iemitsu in hopes of gaining him the shogunate despite the stammer and birthmark which undermine his respect. Iemitsu and his brother Tadanaga become bitter rivals for the shogunate, and the land is split into factions, eventually erupting into warfare. Iemitsu's mentor, his fencing instructor Yagyu, is fixated upon securing Iemitsu the shogunate and ends up betraying everyone, even his own family, in pursuit of the goal.

An independent offensive unit led by Makoto Kusanagi entrusts the suppression of the situation to their ghosts and aims for their own justice. Below the surface of the incident, lies the "tin girl" Emma and the "scarecrow man" Burinda Junior. As Kusanagi deals with the incident, she draws near to what those two ghosts were seeking.

Within this organization, there is a special (and secret) branch known as the ES Force (ES standing for "Encounter of Shadow-work"), consisting of twelve young people that possess amazing superpowers. Each ES member operates with another as a team, and the series' focus is a team of two low-level members, Éclair and Lumière. As the series progresses, they start to see the darker side of GOTT and its secrets.

Fils d'un prêtre, le lycéen japonais Chihiro Furuya a une attirance particulièrement forte envers les zombies. Il collectionne avidement tout ce qui se rapporte à ces derniers, que ce soit les jeux vidéo, les films ou les mangas, il entretient le rêve de voir une jeune fille ramenée à la vie lui déclarer sa flamme. Devant faire face à la mort de son chat Babu, il décidera de le faire revenir à la vie à l'aide d'un vieux manuscrit décrivant le processus de la création d'une potion de « résurrection ». À cette époque, il rencontre une jeune fille nommée Rea Sanka, qui s'est enfuie de chez elle. Dans une tentative de suicide, elle boit un échantillon de la potion de « résurrection » qui est créée à partir d'une herbe vénéneuse connue sous le nom de « Hydrangea macrophylla », mais cela ne parvient pas à la tuer. Après une dispute avec son père, elle tombe d'une falaise et meurt, mais grâce à la potion, elle revient sous forme de zombie. Même si elle est devenue un mort-vivant, elle choisit de ne pas céder à ses instincts meurtriers et survit en consommant fréquemment des feuilles d'hortensia.
