Pour rien au monde un amateur d'histoire de l'aéronautique n'aurait, lors de la diffusion de cette série d'émissions à la fin des années soixante-dix, "manqué un épisode". Que l'histoire de l'aviation soit ici fort bien traitée par le biais d'images d'archives judicieusement choisies et montées, assorties d'un commentaire pertinent, c'est connu de celles et ceux qui se souviennent l'avoir suivie sur le petit écran. Les néophytes, les plus jeunes, ceux qui n’ont jamais vu ces documentaires dont la réédition était tant attendue par leurs aînés, disposeront nécessairement d'un matériau qui aiguisera davantage leur goût (ou leur simple curiosité) pour l'histoire de l'aviation. Mais pour les amateurs plus "éclairés", comment ne pas éprouver un petit pincement au cœur en revoyant les interviews de "vieilles tiges" ou de grandes figures évoquant leur passé et qui, depuis, nous ont quitté ? Pour n’en évoquer que quelques-unes, parmi les ailes françaises : Maurice Tabuteau, Joseph Frantz, Camille Plubeau, Maurice Bellonte, Jean Dabry, Jacques Lecarme, Jacqueline Auriol... Elle avait été reçue par toute une génération comme une manne, et conserve toute sa valeur et sa saveur. Bouder cette collection (non "colorisée") serait sans nul doute une erreur.
